The Problem: Why HOPE Youth Exists

The Challenges Facing Our Youth

Youth with incarcerated parents are six times more likely to be incarcerated themselves. At HOPE Youth, we believe in breaking this cycle through proactive, community-driven support.

Children of incarcerated parents face significant challenges that often go unaddressed. Having a parent incarcerated is considered an adverse childhood experience (ACE), leading to emotional trauma, social stigma, and educational setbacks. In Virginia and beyond, youth impacted by the justice system are six times more likely to end up incarcerated themselves, creating a cycle that’s hard to break.

Many struggle with feelings of abandonment, behavioral issues, and mental health challenges. Schools often fail to provide adequate support, pushing these youth closer to the school-to-prison pipeline. Financial instability and the breakdown of family structures further limit their opportunities to succeed.

Despite the scope of this problem, communities and institutions have largely failed to offer the necessary resources. HOPE Youth exists to change that by addressing these systemic challenges and providing the targeted support these youth need to build brighter futures.
